Middlesex University
The history of Middlesex University began in the late 1880′s was established as a University in 1992 when two educational institutions opened their doors in north London - St Katherine’s College and the Hornsey School of Arts and Crafts. Both would become part of Middlesex Polytechnic, which was founded in 1973. Middlesex was awarded the title ‘University’ – by Royal Assent – in 1992. It is now widely regarded as an excellent international provider of higher education with an outstanding academic credential and highly employable and successful graduates. Now Middlesex is known for many achievements and achieved international reputation as an innovator in higher education. It has been greatly recognised and rewarded for academic and organisational endeavour and expertise.
Learning Resources The Sheppard Library opened in September 2004. Named in honour of the University’s Chancellor, Lord Sheppard of Didgemere, the five-storey building offers outstanding learning facilities. The library collections contain over half a million items, including:
- Around 3,000 current journal titles
- Over 20,000 electronic resources, including databases, journals and e books
- A substantial media (CD and DVD) collection.
The library is a member of the Sconul Access Scheme and part of the M25 Consortium of Higher Education Libraries, which greatly extends the range of resources available to students. The special collections include a comprehensive interior design library, the product information collection, including building material samples, and a fashion collection. Computing facilities in the library comprise networked PCs and Apple Macs running a wide range of software, communications and print services. There is open access to the Internet from all computers and wireless networking to enable student access from their own laptops.
Learning Resources provides academic computing support for teaching and research on all campuses; this includes helpdesks and IT skills training.
The Language Centre is based at Hendon and operates across all campuses. It provides:
- Pre-sessional English programmes and an International Foundation Programme
- In-sessional English and numeracy support
- Dyslexia support
- A range of interpreting programmes
- An IELTS and QTS Testing Centre
The audio-visual facilities include: video-conferencing, television and photographic studios, darkrooms, video-editing suites and various equipment for loan, such as cameras and camcorders.
The Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) is MLA accredited and houses our superb Silver Studio collection of late 19th and early 20th century decorative art and design, designated as of national importance. www.moda.mdx.ac.uk
